Calculate Rates
- A.PA.06.01 Solve applied problems involving rates, including speed, e.g., if a car is going 50 mph, how far will it go in 3 hours?
- Determining Ratios - This is an interactive site where students can reduce the given ration into lowest form. The student receives immediate feedback to their answer. If the solution is correct you move on to a different problem. If the solution is incorrect the students are told why there answer is wrong.
- Figure This! Math Challenges for Families - Figure This! Mathematics challenges for families provides interesting math challenges that middle-school students can do at home with their families. Each challenge features a description of the important math involved, a note on where the math is used in the real world, a hint to get started, complete solutions, "Try This" section, additional related problems with answers, questions to think about, fun facts related to the math, and resources for further explorations. Math challenge #21 is an example of a problem that would help teach this particular benchmark.
- Lemonade Stand - Students run a virtual lemonade stand. The goal of the student is to make as much money as they can in 30 days. Students have control over every part of the business, including pricing, quality control, inventory control, and purchasing supplies. The game also mentions outside factors such as weather and how that would affect business.
- Lesson Plans: How Big is That Star? - This site gives a complete lesson plan for using ratios to determine the size of a star based on observation.
- Paper Pool Games - Number and Operations - Number Sense and Numeration - This site allows the student to interact directly with the activity. It encourages students to challenge themselves to go beyond just looking at a simple pattern. It requires the students to look for ratios that are created from the multiples and factors of the numbers. Students will be working on beginning skills on gathering data and looking for patterns.
- Proportion Basics - This is an interactive lesson on proportion which includes a good explanation along with examples. Practice problems which can be done interactively with step by step help available if necessary.
- Ratios - This is an interactive math site where students solve for ratios. The students are given a ratio and one part (either the numerator or denominator) of another ratio. The students then have to solve for the missing expression. They are given immediate feedback to their answers.
- Webmath - This site allows the students to see how math is used in everyday life. The student has access to calculators that figure out restaurant tips, sale prices, windchill, electric bills, simple interest, compound interest, retirement, loans and stocks. The student is active in figuring these things out.
- A.RP.06.02 Plot ordered pairs of integers and use ordered pairs of integers to identify points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
- Count On - Worm Hunt is great for practicing the coordinate grid. The students choose a coordinate pair to try to find a worm. They get a response to let them know how far they are from the worm, thus the students have to practice figuring distances between points on the grid. This would be an excellent game for 5th and 6th graders.
- Latitude, Longitude, and Map Making - This lesson requires students to review the concepts of latitude and longitude and to use these concepts to create maps of different countries on the computer. They'll conclude by discussing the reasons why it's important to understand latitude and longitude and by creating quizzes in which other students can locate "mystery" places that they map on the computer. The Crack the Code activity has students using a map and latitude/longitude to track down some thieves.
- Taxicab Treasure Hunt - A treasure is hidden in the city. Students are given a map which shows the streets of the city. After picking an intersection, the computer will state how far it is to the treasure by using the shortest distance in blocks. Students need to use this new information, along with the old information, to determine where the treasure is. Students are then asked to write an explanation of the process that they used to locate the treasure. Although this explanation cannot be submitted to the creators of the site, the teacher could informally assess students' problem-solving skills by reading their explanations. Student can also read what other students have written in the past.

Students will complete a numerical analysis, a graphical analysis, and a symbolic analysis from the data.

- A Functional Housing Market - Students will access the Internet to search for housing prices in their town and compare the prices to the number of square feet found in the living area of the house. A linear equation will be derived from the data on a coordinate plane. Any "best-fit" method for determining the graph of the line can be used. This contains a teacher lesson plan and is a student activity. This is designed for an Algebra One course.
- Adventures in Statistics - Students need to collect information about the classroom in their building (example: length, width, height and number of students in the different classrooms). After collecting all the data the students then need to construct graphs representing this data. This contains a teacher lesson plan and is a student activity.
- Fun and Sun: Rent a Car - Students are given the task to rent a car for a family vacation. After collecting their data on various cars and given destinations, they arrange their data in both a table and a graph. Based on there data students will select their best choice for car rental.
- Houston Area Real-Time Traffic Report - Students will calculate the time needed to travel a certain distance given the rate of speed. They will be collecting "real-time traffic maps of the Houston area. Upon collecting their information they will construct graphs. This contains a teacher lesson plan and is a student activity.
- Math Goodies: Introduction to Statistics - This site introduces mean, median, mode, and range. It is a good review of these concepts or it can be used to introduce the topics. A short quiz is offered at the end of the lesson to reinforce student learning.
- Rectangle Pattern Challenges - This site explores patterns in rectangles and then has students organizing the data they find into a table. Also has discussion questions at the end. Use as whole class instruction or print off for individual use.
- Snowfall Statistics for Snowboarding - Students use the Internet to collect the current daily snowfall amounts and also to find the price of a lift ticket for snowboarding at different ski resorts in the United States, the students will take a personal interest in the statistics that we are working with. This interest will create a desire to learn, with the result being that the students will be much more successful in mastering a difficult math topic.
- The Hand Shake - A data collection and analysis class experiment. Use a table to show the number of handshakes when every person in the room shakes hands with everyone else.
- What Percentage of Your Class is Right or Left Handed? - Students will write letters down for 20 seconds with their right hand and then do the same for their left. Record the results in a graph form. This is a student activity.

They will use this information as well as other data to predict when the population will reach 7 billion. They will discuss the reliability of their predictions, compare them to past trends, and discuss social factors that can affect population growth.
