3. Geometry (G)
Kindergarten
- "Create, Explore, and Describe Shapes"
- Beacon Learning Center - Outstanding - This can be a student interactive lesson for reinforcement, or it can be used as a teaching tool for the entire class. Geo Cleo has to try to create a "shape caper". But, there is a lesson of descriptive qualities that must be known/learned first of each of these 3-dimensional objects (cylinders, cubes, rectangular prisms, and pyramids). What a wonderful reteaching activity!
- Gisele's Big Back Yard - Lower elementary students can locate items in everyday life and associate them with the geometric name of that shape. An example would be finding dice as a cube in everyday life. This is a simplistic site and makes finding the items nearly impossible. This site would work exceptionally well for low self esteem students who need a little extra practice.
- Making Triangles and Electronic Geoboard - This is a teacher directed site that would be good for K on up. With teacher direction the child can use an electronic geoboard to make, change, transform and explore shapes.
- RATS! Shapes - This is an interactive site for students K-3rd grade. Students are given a specific shape to watch for as a bird flying over drops shapes. The object is for the student to only catch the shape they were originally given.
- Virtual Manipulatives - This site contains activities for students to explore various geometric concepts using virtual manipulatives. Explanations for use and links to math standards are provided.
- "Explore Geometric Patterns"
- About Symmetry and Pattern (Field Patterns) - This site is appropriate for upper elementary grades. Examples of shapes and letters are shown and how they create patterns and how rotating the letters create a change in the pattern.
- Beacon Learning Center - This site is an elementary interactive narrative discussing patterns and how they are made. Students can be pattern detectives with Adam, Shelby, and Shelby's grandfather. The students need to look for patterns throughout a picture, as well as, finishing a pattern with given choices.
- Max's Math Adventures - Now - Next Patterns - Outstanding - The Summer Mystery Garden is a math and language arts game involving now - next patterns for students in grades K-2. Hosts Max and Ruthie challenge young students to solve math problems by using clues embedded in a fun rhyming poem. Students receive immediate feedback from Max and are encouraged to self-assess by comparing their answers to Max and Ruthie's. The Extension activities and Teacher Guide are very beneficial.
- Patterns and Picture Books - This site allows teachers to connect children's literature with the concept of patterns and their relationships.
- Patterns Here, There, and Everywhere - This is a unit which follows a ten day lesson plan. It involves the student in collecting and organizing real-world items into patterns. The student should be able to design a plan to solve problems using manipulatives, organizing and interpreting data, and using patterns. The unit involves station work, ideas for assessment techniques, and integration of Patterns Across the Curriculum. The student activities are not computer interactive, but are classroom activities.
- Proteacher - Patterns and Relationships - This site provides teachers with many resources and lesson plans pertaining to Patterns and Relationships. Activities range for grade levels K-6. The activities provide many opportunities for students to represent and record patterns and relationships in a variety of ways. This site contains teacher lesson plans.
- The Mysterious Tangram - This is a very student friendly and fun site. Students build shapes by turning, flipping, and combining others to fill patterns. The site gives clues and encourages children by using positive sayings. Good for children 1st grade through 6th.
- Virtual Manipulatives Geometry - This site contains activities for students to explore various geometric concepts using virtual manipulatives. Explanations for use and links to math standards are provided.
